Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means staying in control of time and money, and knowing what protection you have before you bet. This page explains what that looks like for UK readers who are researching bookmakers outside the GAMSTOP scheme, where several of the usual safeguards work differently or are absent.
If you have registered with GAMSTOP to stop gambling, please do not use this site to find ways around it. Self-exclusion exists to protect you. If gambling is causing you harm, skip to the support section below.
Disclosure and how we approach this page
This site may earn commission if you join an operator through our links. Commission does not decide rankings or what we say about a bookmaker's risks. Our statements are based on research and review of publicly available information as of 1 October 2026. We have not claimed to have deposited, bet or withdrawn with any operator. For more on who we are, see About Us.
What GAMSTOP and the UK Gambling Commission actually do
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service for Great Britain. When you register for a period of six months, one year or five years, every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must block your account and stop marketing to you. The exclusion cannot be reversed early, and when it ends you must take a step to be removed.
The UKGC is the regulator for gambling that is offered to people in Great Britain. Its licence conditions cover things like identity checks, affordability and safer gambling interactions, fair terms and complaints handling. Northern Ireland has separate legislation, so it is worth being precise: GAMSTOP and UKGC rules are about Great Britain, not the whole UK.
What "not on GamStop" really means
A bookmaker that is not on GAMSTOP is generally licensed outside Great Britain, often by an overseas authority, and is not bound by UKGC rules. Accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised to serve them. That has practical consequences:
- Your GAMSTOP exclusion will not apply, so no automatic barrier exists if you are trying to stay away.
- UKGC complaint routes and alternative dispute resolution may not be available. Disputes go through the operator and its own licensing body, which can be slower and less predictable.
- Deposit limits, loss limits, reality checks and cooling-off tools may exist, but they are set by the operator rather than required in the UKGC form. Check each one before you register.
- Verification and source-of-funds checks can still be requested, sometimes at the point of withdrawal. Delays and disputes are possible, and no withdrawal is guaranteed.
No betting site is completely safe, and this applies to licensed UK operators as well. The difference is how much protection stands behind you if something goes wrong.
Questions to ask before you open an account
- Which licence does the site hold, and can you confirm it on the regulator's own register rather than the operator's footer?
- Are deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion available, and can you set them before your first deposit?
- Are limit increases delayed, or instant? A cooling-off period on increases is a good sign.
- What are the bonus terms: wagering requirements, minimum qualifying odds, expiry dates, maximum bet size and cashout caps?
- Which payment methods work with a GBP account, and are there fees or currency conversion charges?
- How does the complaints procedure work, and who can you escalate to?
Bonuses and why they affect control
Offers can push you to deposit more or bet faster than planned. Several of the sites on our lists advertise large percentages, for example Tenobet at 300% up to €3,000, smash at 250% up to €5,000 and Gambiva at 300% up to €3,500. Others are in pounds, such as 7abet at 300% up to £200 or Gamble Gorilla at 100% up to £100 with a £20 deposit. These are the operators' advertised figures, and the full conditions sit in each bonus's terms, which we have not been able to confirm in detail for every one.
A worked example: you deposit £20 and receive a £20 bonus with a 10x wagering requirement on the bonus. You would need to stake £200 before the bonus funds can be withdrawn. At typical odds that is a lot of betting for a small sum, and a loss along the way is possible. Bonuses are never free money, and you do not have to take one. Many bettors choose to opt out, which keeps withdrawals simpler.
Larger headline amounts are also priced in euros or dollars at some operators. If your account is not in GBP, conversion fees and exchange rates can quietly add to your cost. See our Terms and Conditions for how we handle offers on this site.
Set your limits before you bet
- Deposit limit: a daily, weekly or monthly cap on what you can add. Decide it from spare income, not from what you hope to win.
- Loss limit: caps net losses over a period, which is often more useful than a deposit limit alone.
- Time-out or cooling-off: a short break from 24 hours up to several weeks.
- Self-exclusion: a longer closure with that operator. Remember that excluding with one non GamStop site does not close any other account.
- Reality checks: reminders showing how long you have played.
If you use more than one bookmaker, set limits at every one. A single operator's limits cannot see what you do elsewhere.
Practical tools that work across all sites
- Bank-level gambling blocks: many UK banks let you block gambling transactions on your card or app.
- Blocking software such as Gamban or BetBlocker for phones, tablets and computers.
- Keeping gambling money in a separate account so you can see exactly what you spend.
- Avoiding betting when stressed, tired or after drinking, and never chasing losses.
- Never borrowing to bet. Gambling is not a source of income and not a fix for money worries.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you planned or for longer than you meant to.
- Hiding activity from family or friends.
- Chasing losses with bigger stakes.
- Feeling irritable or anxious when you are not betting.
- Using several accounts to get around limits or exclusions.
If several of these sound familiar, treat that as a reason to pause rather than look for another site.

Eligibility and legal standing
You must be 18 or over to gamble in Great Britain. It is not illegal for an individual in Britain to use an offshore site, but those operators are generally not licensed by the UKGC, and you may have limited recourse if there is a dispute. Operators can ask for photo ID, proof of address and sometimes source of funds before paying out. Have these ready.
Choosing a bookmaker with control in mind
Our top-ranked operators, including Tenobet, smash, Betninja, CoinPoker and WinnerIsland, are rated by us on factors we can verify from public information, such as offer terms and available features. Their ratings are editorial opinions and not customer scores. None of them removes the main trade-off: stepping outside UKGC oversight means fewer guaranteed protections. If you want fuller detail on markets and bonuses, our non GamStop casinos guide covers the casino side, and you can reach us through Contact Us with corrections.
A sensible next step is simple: decide a monthly budget, set limits first, read the terms, and stop if betting stops being fun.
